Ahhh, flowers...
What could be more important than beautiful flowers at your wedding? I for one cannot imagine a wedding without them, unless of course the bride is allergic to flowers, at which point there are many gorgeous natural elements like ferns, and other plants that could easily make a grand statement. The fact is, creating an amazing event with or without flowers takes skill, experience, and creative talent. From the simplest boutonniere to the most elaborate centerpiece, the statement your wedding flowers make will be permanently immortalized in your photographs and in the memories of your guests. Which is one reason hiring a floral professional can make all the difference and give you the most bang for your buck.

The various floral professionals are:
Florist-To become a florist just takes either owning a floral shop or working in one. No specialized training is required, and you may or may not get someone who has worked on wedding flowers before. It's a risk, but, if you are willing to take that risk, you could save yourself some money. Just be aware that you may not get the look you are envisioning. Now, don't get me wrong, many florists are highly qualified and can create amazing floral designs. It is just important that you understand that there is no accreditation required to be a florist, so, if you are looking for the skilled and experienced type, ask questions and to see examples of their previous work. Have the florist create the design you want for your bouquet or centerpieces to give you a visual example of what your day will look like under their hand.

Floral Designer-Again, anyone can give themselves this title, but, there are many professionals that have gone through floral design schools and become certified in floral design. Many are also members of floral design associations. These are all important qualifications and should be high on your list of requirements when hiring a floral designer. Now, keep in mind, because of their training and experience, you may well pay more for a floral designer's work, but, the chances of you being thrilled with their work is much more likely. A skilled floral designer can create whatever you want or need, and is able to be creative with natural mediums in the case of the bride who either does not want or cannot have natural flowers at her wedding. Floral designers also have connections in the industry that enable them to step outside of the local box when looking for unusual floral elements.
Event Designer/Floral Designer-
Here you have the double threat of someone who is not only a skilled floral designer, but, has the talent to create the entire event design. People like the amazing Preston Bailey have this talent and skill, and are well worth the fees involved in hiring them. They are able to combine so many elements to create a stunning, and artfully executed event.

Again, as always, bear in mind that floral professionals, with the possible exception of the event/floral designer, focus on the skills they bring to the event, and do not handle any other elements in your event, such as setting up tables and chairs, or creating specialized lighting, which will be our next topic in this series
